The United States purchased the US Virgin Islands - about 68 volcanic islands east of Puerto Rico - from the Dutch in 1917 as an attempt to protect the waterway approach to the Panama Canal. The three most popular islands are St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. St. Croix is the largest with dry terrain in the east and lush tropical forests in the west. Hike, kayak, golf, snorkel or scuba dive reefs and wrecks. St. Thomas is the busiest due to passengers arriving on cruise ships and yachts in Charlotte Amalie harbour. St. John is the smallest with two-thirds of it existing within the 3,838 ha (9,485 acre) Virgin Islands National Park. In 2001 the underwater Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument was added to the park. US Virgin Islands hotels and US Virgin Islands resorts are listed and will help you plan your trip.
