Trinidad and Tobago are only 11 km (7 mi.) from Venezuela. Originally visited by Columbus in 1797, Trinidad and Tobago stopped being a Spanish colony in 1797 when the British took control. After slavery was abolished, the African ex-slave labour was boosted by Indian and Chinese labour, which explains Trinidad and Tobago's multi-ethnic nature.

Trinidad is one of the most industrialized Caribbean economies due to its geography being oil-rich like its South American neighbour. Trinidad is famous for its lively Carnival - usually held in February - one of the world's best street parties.

Tobago is 34 km (21 mi.) away and is the calm sister to Trinidad with classic Caribbean resorts, beaches and marine environment. Due to the South American influence, there is a different and more diverse collection of plant and animal species than elsewhere in the Caribbean.
