Suriname is geographically part of South America but its coastline is Caribbean in feel. Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana) started its Dutch history when the Netherlands and the USA swapped New Amsterdam (now New York City) for Suriname. The diverse ethnicity of Suriname is the result of slaves from Africa, India, China and Java whose descendants now call Suriname home. Due to minimal forestry industry Suriname has the world's highest ratio of forested country. Visitors should bring binoculars to view exotic birds in the nearly 1.6 million ha (4 million acre) Central Suriname Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's best to hire an outfitter, most of which are based in Paramaibo (AKA Parbo). Suriname hotels and Suriname resorts are listed and will help you plan your trip.
