Between 1674 and 1814 St. Lucia alternated between French and British control, finally ending with the British. This pattern has played itself out on other Caribbean islands leading to place names, like Soufrière - un nom trés français - but loyal to Queen Elizabeth II. St. Lucia has been fully independent since 1979 and is a member of Commonwealth. St. Lucia has forested mountains from north to south with river valleys that all culminate at Mt. Gimie. In the southwest, the Qualibou is an area of lava domes and craters that, in the west, has the famous twin Pitons. These 800 m (2,625 ft.) peaks are found at the entral to Jalousie Plantation harbour. A majority of St. Lucia's resorts are north of Castries. Rodney Bay is known for its white-sand beaches. For scuba divers, the Soufrière Marine Management Area prohibits fishing, which gives an amazing coral reefs and reef life.
