Jamaica is iconic. What other country could produce Bob Marley, Summer and Winter Olympics athletes, excellent rum, provide Ian Fleming with his Goldeneye retreat (to write the James Bond novels), and a unique culture (think reggae; think Rasta) while still being part of the British Commonwealth?

Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain in 1494, which kicked off the destruction of the indigenous Arawak and Tanio peoples and led to the importation of African slaves. By 1655 the British had wrested control of the island from the Spanish. Jamaica attained full independence in 1962.

Jamaica is the third largest Caribbean island with six key tourist areas Montego Bay, Negril, Mandeville and The South Coast, Kingston, Port Antonio and Ocho Rios. A variety of Jamaican resorts and hotels are eager to serve you.

Despite a lot of beaches, Jamaica has a mountainous interior, featuring the 2,256 m (7,402 ft.) Blue Mountain Peak, which is a good trek for those wanting to escape the beach. Jamaica claims to be home to 3,000 species of flowering plants, some unique to Jamaica. Formal gardens include: Coyaba River Garden, Cranbrook Flower Forest, Hope Botanical Gardens, and Shaw Park Gardens.
