Canada has close ties to Haiti; Canada's current Governor General is originally from Haiti. Haiti is on the western third of the island of Hispaniola and was originally under Spanish rule but was ceded to France in 1697. In 1804, a slave rebellion occurred leading to the world's first black republic. Sadly, there has been years of political and civil unrest. The U.S. State Department has travel warnings for Haiti. Intrepid travellers will enjoy Haiti's cultural offerings - with castles, history, architecture, art and music - plus its natural beauty. Haiti hotels and Haiti resorts are listed and will help you plan your trip. Image courtesy of Haiti Office of Tourism - Rafaelle Castera - Photographer. |
