It's hard to know where to start with Cuba, the Caribbean's largest island. In 1959 Fidel Castro wrested control of the country and established his communist party's control. A strong tie with the Soviet Union and Cuba's mere 144.8 km (90 mi.) distance south of Key West, FL, caused the USA to become uncomfortable, if not unhinged. Despite recent relaxation, and even the fall of the Soviet Union, the USA has had a Cuba embargo since 1962. Of course this did not stop the British, Canadians and Europeans from enjoying low cost vacations in Cuba. Due in part to its isolation, Cuba's architecture from its Spanish colonial roots has remained visible. Old Havana's square mile of colonial palaces, plazas and cobbled alleys has been designated by UNESCO as a city of world heritage. Cuba has three mountain ranges and fertile plains where the mainstay sugar cane and world-renowned (if bad for you) tobacco grows. Most tourists at least manage to enjoy some of the best beaches in the world. Cuba hotels and Cuba resorts are listed and will help you plan your vacation. Image courtesy of Cuba Tourist Board. |
